The Lie of Later
đź“– Scripture:
“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.” – Proverbs 27:1 (NIV)
🙌🏻 Devotional:
This verse is a sober reminder that tomorrow is not promised. One of the enemy’s subtle deceptions is what we might call “the lie of later.” It whispers: “I’ll forgive them later. I’ll pursue my calling later. I’ll obey God later. I’ll deal with my healing later.” But later often never comes.
God is not against planning for the future; He is against presumption—living as though we are in control of time itself. Every day is a gift, not a guarantee. When we put off obedience, healing, or reconciliation, we risk missing the opportunities God has placed before us today.
This verse calls us into a posture of humility and urgency. Life is fragile, and God invites us to walk in faithful action today rather than delay what He is prompting in our hearts.
📝 Reflection Questions:
- What important step of obedience or healing have I been putting off, telling myself I’ll deal with it “later”?
- How do I approach my daily life—am I presuming I will always have another day, or am I living in gratitude for today?
- What would change in my priorities if I truly believed that today is the only day I’m guaranteed?
- Is there someone I need to forgive, encourage, or reconcile with right now rather than waiting?
- How can I invite God into my plans while still holding them loosely, knowing He is sovereign?
🙏🏻 Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the gift of today. Forgive me for the times I have believed the lie of later—delaying obedience, healing, or reconciliation. Teach me to number my days and to live with a sense of holy urgency, making the most of every opportunity You place before me. Help me to trust You with tomorrow while walking faithfully in what You call me to today. Give me courage to act, humility to depend on You, and wisdom to choose what matters most. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
