God Himself Receives Us Into His Family
đź“– Scripture:
“And I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty.” – Corinthians 6:18 (ESV)
🙌🏻 Devotional:
This verse is the climax of Paul’s exhortation to the Corinthian believers (2 Corinthians 6:14–17), where he calls them to separate from ungodly partnerships and idolatry. God promises that if His people live set apart, He Himself will embrace them as a Father, giving them the highest privilege of being His sons and daughters.
This is not just a metaphor—it’s adoption into God’s family through Christ.
- Adoption into God’s family: Romans 8:15–17 reminds us that we have received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry “Abba, Father.”
- God’s personal promise: Paul echoes Old Testament promises, like 2 Samuel 7:14 (“I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son”) and Isaiah 43:6 (“bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth”).
- Separation and belonging: 2 Corinthians 6:17 quotes Isaiah 52:11—“Come out from them, and be separate”—showing that intimacy with God often requires leaving behind what defiles us.
- God’s covenant love: Revelation 21:7 confirms this eternal truth: “The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will be my son.”
In short: God doesn’t just forgive us—He welcomes us into His household as beloved children.
âť“ Reflection Questions
- Identity: What does it mean for you personally to be called God’s son or daughter (Romans 8:15–17)?
- Separation: Are there influences, habits, or relationships God may be calling you to step away from so you can walk more fully as His child (2 Corinthians 6:17)?
- Security: How does God’s promise in Revelation 21:7 encourage you to face trials or uncertainty with confidence?
- Response: What practical step can you take this week to live out your identity as a son/daughter of the Lord Almighty?
🙏🏻 Prayer:
“Heavenly Father, thank You for adopting me as Your child through Jesus Christ. I am grateful that I don’t walk alone, but under the care of a loving Father. Help me to live set apart from the world, not out of fear, but out of love and devotion to You. Remind me daily that I am Your beloved child—secure, protected, and empowered by Your Spirit. Strengthen me to reflect Your love and character to others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
