đ Scripture:
âBut the Lord God called to the man, âWhere are you?ââ â Genesis 3:9 (NIV)
From the very beginning, pain and shame have tempted us to hide. After Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, their first instinct wasnât confessionâit was covering. They sewed fig leaves together, hid among the trees, and tried to disappear into the shadows of their guilt.
But Godârich in mercyâdidnât come into the garden with wrath in His voice.
He came with a question:âWhere are you?â
God didnât ask because He didnât know. He asked because He wanted them to know.
To recognize the distance.
To confront the wound.
To expose what was hiddenânot to shame them, but to heal them.
We do the same thing today.
We hide behind our smiles, our service, our work, even our faith language.
But beneath it all, thereâs often unspoken painâabuse, betrayal, rejection, unworthiness, failure, fear.
And just like in Eden, God still calls out:
âWhere are you?â
Heâs not trying to punish you.
Heâs inviting you to come out of hiding.
To stop covering up the very place He wants to heal.
God is not afraid of your brokenness.
Heâs not overwhelmed by your emotions.
Heâs not disgusted by what youâve been through or what youâve done.
He is a healer, not a condemner.
But healing begins with exposure.
What we hide, we keep in the dark.
But what we bring to God, we bring into the lightâwhere grace, truth, and transformation live.
đď¸ Reflection Questions:
- What area of pain have I been hiding from God, myself, or others?
- In what ways do I cover up or avoid dealing with that hurt?
- How would my life change if I fully exposed this to God and allowed Him to begin healing it?
Â
đ Prayer:
âLord, You already know whatâs hidden in my heart. Today, I stop running. I stop hiding. I bring my wounds, my shame, and my pain into the light of Your presence. Search me, find me, and heal me. I trust You with what hurts. Amen.â
đ Devotional Truth:
God doesnât ask, âWhere are you?â to condemn you â He asks to restore you.
