God Responds to Even the Smallest Steps of Trust

📖 Scripture:

He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” – Matthew 17:20 (NIV)

🙌🏻 Devotional:

In this verse, Jesus is addressing His disciples after they were unable to cast out a demon. He points to the power of genuine faith, not the size of the faith itself. Even faith as small as a mustard seed—tiny, but alive and capable of growth—can move “mountains.”

Here, mountains symbolize obstacles, challenges, or impossibilities in our lives. Jesus emphasizes that it isn’t the quantity of our faith that matters, but the quality—faith that is rooted in Him, alive, and exercised in dependence on God.

This verse reminds us:

  • God responds to even the smallest step of trust.
  • Our weakness isn’t the final word; God’s power is.
  • Faith grows as we use it—just like a seed grows when planted.

💡 Reflection Questions:

  1. What “mountains” or obstacles in my life right now feel immovable?
  2. Do I sometimes focus more on the size of my faith rather than the greatness of God?
  3. How can I practice exercising faith daily, even in small ways?
  4. Am I allowing fear, doubt, or self-reliance to keep me from trusting God fully?
  5. Where have I seen God move in response to even a little faith in my past?

🙏🏻 Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for reminding me that even faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains when it is placed in You. Strengthen my faith where I am weak, and help me to trust You in the areas that feel impossible. Teach me to rely on Your power and not my own. Lord, I surrender my doubts and fears, and I ask that You help me walk in confidence that You are able to do exceedingly abundantly above all I could ask or imagine. Grow my faith daily, and let it bear fruit for Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
